Take-Offs and Landings

War moves people. We don't mean emotionally - although it does that, too - we mean physically. War moves people, but how and in which directions is never easy to predict. The journey of American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan is rarely a clean arc of a single deployment, service, and reintegration, but rather many cycles of entering and leaving the theater of war. The timeline is even less clear for the civilians war displaces, who leave home in search of another, or return home to find that their idea of home no longer exists, or come and go and come and go in search of a safe place. This month on War News Radio: "Take-offs and Landings": stories of comings, goings, and the criss-crossing paths of war and peace. This month on War News Radio, “Strife in Syria,” where we look at the current conflicts in Syria from multiple perspectives. We begin with a background on what’s been happening in Syria to date. Next, we hear from two professors about the social dimensions of the Syrian conflict. Then, we present a Syria-themed version of our editorial segment, “Filibusted.” Afterwards, we talk to a Syrian student about his perspective on the violence. Finally, we discuss the challenges to eliminating Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal.

This week on War News Radio, “Chaos and Crisis." First, we summarize the current civil war in Syria. Next, we present our editorial segment, “Filibusted.” Then, we hear from youth protesters in Brazil, Turkey, and Egypt. After, we examine the return of U.S. drone strikes in Yemen.

Changing Landscapes

In this month’s show, we examine three issues that build on the relationship between environmental stresses and conflict. First, we examine the impact of a five-year drought on the Syrian Revolution. Then, we investigate the effects of changes in global climate on farming, particularly in regions prone to conflict. Finally, we ask whether water scarcity in Yemen is a threat to national security. But first, a brief commentary on the current state of environmental issues.

Forward Thinking

This month on War News Radio, “Forward Thinking”, we first discuss the future of Iraq in light of the ten year anniversary this past March. Then, we hear about a Philadelphia-based peace group protesting research on drone technology. Finally, we hear a Rwandan genocide survivor’s perspective on justice, forgiveness, and life in America.

10 Years Since Iraq

In this month’s show, we commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the war in Iraq through a look at the country’s past, present and future and the impact the U.S. invasion has had throughout. First, we reconnect with a member of War News Radio’s founding staff to re-examine a piece she produced in 2006. Next, we talk to four Iraqis living in Baghdad about their thoughts on the war and why it continues to linger. Then, we hear about a group stationed in Iraq to promote peace and human rights. Finally, we find out why the question of when the war began is almost as hard to answer as when it will end.

Moving Up, Moving Out

This month on War News Radio, “Moving Up, Moving Out”, we discuss what stories in the news this week angered us the most. Then, we learn about France's involvement in the military conflict in Mali. Next, we hear the stories of three veterans whose photography is on dislay in Philadelphia. After, we examine responses to the lifted ban on women in conflict.
